Anti Fungal. Anti fungal medication treats fungal infections such as ringworm, athlete´s foot and candidiasis (thrush). Fungal infections live off a protein called keratin, which makes up the hair, nails and skin, which means that skin is usually affected by fungus. Because most infections are on the surface, treatment is usually topical and applied directly to the infected area in the form of lotions, sprays, powders and creams. The causes of a fungal skin infection can include being overweight, suffering from diabetes or having a weak immune system because of another condition. The infections can also develop by not drying properly after bathing, wearing tight clothes that don´t allow sweat to evaporate and damage to the skin from a graze or cut. The infections can spread from person to person and can be caught in communal areas such as swimming pools and gyms. It is also possible for some fungal infections, such as ringworm, to be caught from domestic animals and in rare cases from cattle. The infections are divided into groups, depending on the kind of organism that is present. Most basic infections are caused by a type of fungi called dermatophytes, which causes nail, skin and hair infections. Dermatophyte infections include athlete´s foot, ringworm and nail infections. Athlete´s foot is caused by a mixture of aceria and fungi, which leads skin (especially between the toes) to become dry, itchy, scaly and red. It can sometimes blister and crack and can also spread to the hands. Ringworm often affects exposed areas of the body such as the limbs and abdomen. It causes red raised or flat patches and rings that can merge and spread. Nail infections cause nails on the fingers and toes to become malformed, thickened and crumbly. Other fungal skin infections – intertrigo, pityriasis versicolor and thrush - are caused by yeast infections. Intertrigo affects areas where skin folds, such as in the armpit and groin area. It is caused by the fungus Candid albicans, which live on skin and in the digestive system and leads to itching, soreness, spots and scales. Pityriasis versicolor, which is also called Tinea Versicolor, causes dark patches on pale skin and light patches on darker skin. The fungus candida albicans can lead to thrush when the fungus multiplies, for example during pregnancy, in illness, or with poorly controlled diabetes. It affects areas lined with a mucus membrane such as the mouth and tongue.

Shop around. Drug prices can vary from drugstore to drugstore, so it's definitely worth your time to compare prices at the different pharmacies in your area. Using U.S.-based online pharmacies is another way to save 25 percent or more. Drugstore.com and familymeds.com are two good sites that provide solid savings, but there are dozens to choose from. If you opt for an online pharmacy, be sure you purchase from ones that have the "VIPPS" seal of approval (see vipps.info) from the National Association of Board of Pharmacy. Seniors enrolled in a Medicare prescription drug plan also need to make sure the online pharmacy they're buying from is included in their network. Otherwise, the purchase may not count toward their deductible.
